WHO YOU ARE IS WHO YOU ATTRACT
Reading some John Maxwell stuff and wanted to share:
Effective leaders are always on the lookout for good people. I think all of us carry around a mental check list of what kind of people we would like on our team. Believe it or not, who you get is not determined by what you want. It’s determined by who you are.
It is possible for a leader to go out and recruit people unlike themselves but it’s crucial to recognize people who are different will not naturally be attracted to them.
If you think the people you attract could be better, then it’s time for you to improve yourself.
THE TRUTH ABOUT ATTRACTION:
1. Every leader has a measure of magnetism.
All leaders attract people. Highly charismatic ones often attract large numbers of people, but even modest leaders have a following. If they didn’t they wouldn’t be leaders.
2. A leader’s magnetism may impact others intellectually, emotionally, or volitionally.
Not all leaders affect all people in the same way, not do they use the same means of influencing others. The greatest leaders connect on multiple levels: with follower’s minds, hearts, and wills.
3. Magnetism is neither good nor bad in itself – it depends on what a leader does with it.
Charismatic leaders come in all shapes and sizes. There are Adolf Hitlers and mother Teresas. Magnetism is like money. It’s neither bad nor good. It’s just a tool.
4. While all leaders draw similar followers, secure leaders draw both similar and complementary followers.
Your natural tendency as a leader will always be to attract people similar to yourself: similar in values, age, and attitude, among other things. But secure leaders will be the ones that acknowledge and accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths and are able to attract people who complement their strengths and make up for their weaknesses.
5. Leader’s magnetism is not static.
A leader’s magnetism can be cultivated, shaped, and matured. Like every other quality found in good leaders, magnetism can be developed. The ability to cast vision and connect with people can be improved. If you will look at people you have been attracting as a leader you will find out a lot about yourself. What you observe may please you. But if it doesn’t – if you’re not getting the kind or number of followers you’d like – there’s good news. You need not be stuck where you are. You can grow and change in this area of your leadership.
Question for thought: What kind of people are drawn to you?
